Essential skills are the new Black!

I believe you are quite familiar with the Hard-skills and Soft-skills idea. There are a lot of successfully created competency models exist that used to raise the skills. Everything was fine until IT became the true VUCA. Yes, the brave new world's description is well known, but everybody could feel the difference in 2020.

Things that were desirable skills of a specialist for successful work is becoming mandatory in modern life. The classic description of Hard&Soft to grow our professional skills is not enough.

I want to invite you to the talk for the Essential-skills (fundamental skills) concept discussion, how the transition from Hard&Soft skills to Essential skills occurs.

Experienced managers could look at how Essential skills are manifested, what these skills give and will be able to take into account when forming their competency models. New professionals will be able to reconsider their development beyond the classic Hard& Soft-skills model.

STAR/AR on interview. Do's and Dont's

I believe that many of us in some or another way participate in the interviews, or when looking for a job, or when looking for colleagues.

Sometimes it is even successfully, and sometimes the success goes after us from both sides.

In the talk, I would like to consider one of the patterns for questioning, and also for answering questions, in the context of interviews of testers and test leads.

We will have a look at how it works, what can be taken and used during the job discussion. What fails I managed to collect when I just heard about it and started using it without thinking (or too wisely).

I sincerely want you, listeners, to be able to leave the talk with an understanding of this pattern, and with some hits & tricks on how to conduct an interview and answer the things differ from a guessing quiz: what a bug is, testing, etc.

The talk will be useful for junior interviewers and for interviewee.

Buzzword Driven Management

Continuation of the report: https://sqadays.com/ru/talk/44837

We examine the patterns of different demonstrations of management and discuss what the tester can and should do there.

Examples of the patterns:

  • The manager-chameleon takes the point of view, which is popular now among everybody. It seems to everyone that he supports them and everything is going well. At first.
  • The cuckoo-manager likes to come up with ideas, and give them to someone else for implementation. If something is hatched in the end, then this is his idea, and if not, this is an off-kilter implementation of stupid performers.
  • The squirrel-manager shoves tasks to the first comer. Some of them lead to success unexpectedly.
  • The seagull-manager: flew in, yelled, soiled, flew away. (c) Sergey Berezhnoy

If you have these questions, answers and priceless ideas, experience in (or work with) any role (manager, leader, engineer, power behind the throne) - feel free to join to my speech.

We will discuss leadership and software testing, pattern from our regular duties. And let's try to make postmortem of leadership phenomena if exist.

Buzzword driven development

There are can be no Agile, no Waterfall, as for processes -- it can be a fairy tale, and we have only real life conditions in our reality. And our life is impact to approaches that we used for development. There is a new term "East-Slavic methodology" noted on one of issues of RadioQA - this is chaos with the project processes. Come with me, we discuss typical HFDD, ODD, MDD and other DD - their symptoms. We will find the solution for what testers should do in this case.

The emotional intellect in testing

"Emotional Intelligence" (EQ) - the concept known on the West, on the other hand in CIS only gaining popularity.
Is the EQ concept be useful, measurable for the testing? My opinion is yes. In our work we are faced with the emotions and their impact on the software. It are our emotions, customer's emotions, developer's emotions. This report is not only about psychology, it is about emotions like an oracle, emotions like metrics. I'm going to share an EQ concept, how it can be used as a test oracle, how it can be used for test management. Surely, company could has a perfect metrics, processes, but people will be people and software developing and testing by the people.

Three tools of test manager for people management

Work with processes, metrics, budgets and plans are important for test manager, besides of it, we are working with things called by Alister Cockburn "... as non-linear, first-order components in software development" - people.

The answer to the question "How to work with people" will be "communicate and be simple" in 90% cases. Is it awesome, isn't it? Measurable, doable, scalable, agile... There are can be all manager's epithets to describe this work as a manageable.

In case to be serious, there are well-known tools of experienced and good managers for "herding cats".

My masterclass will help you to be familiar with three of these tools: communication algorithm, constructive feedback and motivation-discipline, and you will have chances to try it in practice.

Threat modeling for application

The main goal of any attack in the implementation of threats - gaining unauthorised access to data.

As testers, we test application for vulnerabilities, however, the presence of some system for effective security testing will be helpful.

One of these basics can become threat modeling application. This is one of the practices of Security Development Lifecycle (SDL).

This framework allows developers and testers to identify and fix the potential safety problems in the early stages of software development.

I will tell you the basic concept of threat modelling and show how this can be done .

The presentation will be interesting to specialists who have recently meet with the software security.
